This statement seems to have been not too unrealistic in the past.
The bavarian rural population was searching for a piece of clothing for everyday use, which was sturdy and tough.
Which material could fit better than leather?
So they started to make trousers from leather, which could „the simple man“ use when on the field as well as with the cattle.
In the beginning they were very simple trousers out of leather but then the „Lederhosen-makers“ made them finer and more complicated which were due of the complicated production process not anymore just common work clothes.
Today it is just a prejudice, that every Bavarian wears only his Lederhosen even when it is assumed almost everywhere.
Though here in Bavaria the tradition is still being sustained and the Lederhosen are as well as a Dirndl on the Oktoberfest a "must".
The Bavarians are mostly very proud of their mostly hand-made Lederhosen and show them by any occasion.
